The blessing of children is one of the core values of Church of the Cross. This means two things to us. First, we welcome and embrace them as participants in the life of the church, seeking to bless the children in our midst with the nurture and instruction God commands every generation to give the next (Ps. 78). We bless the children in our midst by making our investment in their lives a priority.
Second, we value the blessing that children are. Children are capable of great faith. Numerous examples of children at work for God in the Scriptures give witness to this fact, which is also borne out by the experience of every generation. Jesus taught us that children are a blessing to the adults in their faith communities because of the picture they portray of a right posture before God. There is something about the kingdom we do not understand without the example of dependence, trust, openness, and transcendence that children provide.
“Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Matt.19:14, NIV) are words which continue to issue a challenge to us today as we seek to understand Jesus’s heart for the children and the radical nature of the kingdom their example reveals.
On a typical Sunday morning here at Church of the Cross we have opportunities for infants through 6th grade to gather in age appropriate classes. In these classrooms we make invitations typical of sacred spaces: reading the Bible, prayer, authentic response and established liturgies to lay down a foundation early in the lives of this growing generation of Christ followers, the church now and church to come.
